Event Types

In the JSL, events are classified as either short events, long events or relays.

Short Events

In a short event, swimmers 8 and under swim one length of the pool for 25 meters/yards (depending on pool size). Swimmers age 9 and over swim 2 lengths of the pool for 50 yards/meters. Crozet Pool is a 25 meter pool.

Short events consist of the Freestyle (Free), Backstroke (Back), Breaststroke (Breast) and Butterfly (Fly) for all age groups 7 and over. The 6 and under age group only swims the 25 Free and 25 Back.

Long Events

There are 2 long events in JSL meets. Swimmers swimming in long events swim double the length required for the short events.

Individual Medley (IM) - One swimmer (age 9 and over only) swims the fly, back, breast and free (in that order) for a 100 meters/yards (4 lengths).

Long Freestyle - A swimmer 8 and under swims the freestyle for 50 meters/yards (2 lengths). A swimmer 9 years of age and older swims the freestyle for 100 meters/yards (4 lengths). This is not available as a 6 and under event.

Relay Events

Medley Relay - Each swimmer (4 total in a relay) swims one of the 4 strokes (back, breast, fly, free in that order) for the designated short event length for their age group. This is not available as a 6 and under event.

Free Relay - Each swimmer (4 total) swims the freestyle event for the designated short event length for their age group.
